I don't know if the RPG-ness of the above post gave it away, but if you couldn't tell - I'm a massive geek... so naturally I love Doctor Who.
Anyways, just saw the first episode of the 5th season of the new Doctor Who. I am suitably impressed. Very intense. VERY intense. I still miss the Tenth Doctor terribly, but there's a madcap zany-ness, pace and optimism in the new Doctor that you can't help but love. New TARDIS too! Wowzer!!
Plus Steven Moffat has the reins, so I'm expecting the new episodes to be equal parts delightful AND terrifying (he is the master of scary episodes that Mssr. Moffat... the first episode was pretty scary). Or delightfully terrifying, or terrifyingly delightful.
Kind-o-hard to describe. It's like a mix between indie/alt rock, canada, manga art, twentysomethings, comedy, romance, epic super-powered fights (think superman or dragon ball), cooking recipes and other awesome stuff/sauce.
Really like the characters. Brian Lee O'Malley is a very super-talented writer.
Also been listening to a lot of Air especially their new album Love 2. It's a bit more heavier and uptempo than their previous stuff, but its still very dreamy and great.
But not muchos else happening. I might post a recipe or something soon. Take it easy! Weekend! Woo!
p.s. I'm playing a gig tonight with my 10-piece-funk-dance-soul-cover-band Doctor Wasabi :) It's at Paddy McGuire's Central/Haymarket (near the Capitol theatre) show starts at 9.30pm plus it's FREE.
"An all-ages free night of rapping, singing, dance, visual projections and spoken word. Featuring some of Western Sydney’s emerging young talent, alongside Australia’s leading wordsmiths and performers, including Brothablack, Ozibatla, TrueVibe Nation and MC Trey."
"Is today’s spoken-word movement an offshoot of hip hop? Or are rappers leaving the beats behind to get their content heard? Is spoken-word solo theatre? Four verse hurlers sling theories. Featuring Miles Merrill, Charlie Dark (UK) and Emilie Zoey Baker (Melbourne). Hosted by Alana Hicks."
The Art of Slam - Free, Sunday, May 23, Wharf 2, Sydney Theatre Company
"It’s the most popular poetry movement in the world and most of it is not written down. Who are slammers? What is slamming? And why do poetry slams scare academics? An exploration of the artform with performances. Featuring slam champions Omar Musa (ACT), Sarah Taylor, Marc Testart (Melbourne) and Bravo Child. Hosted by the founder of the Australian Poetry Slam, Miles Merrill."
I didn't really give it a lot of credit when I was younger, then I discovered artists like The Roots, Kanye West and Outkast (and newer cats like Lupe Fiasco).
Then I fell in love with the genre.
I've always had a love of Jazz and spoken poetry and all things considered, Hip Hop is but an apple from the same tree.
Both Jazz and Hip Hop are powerful means of African American expression, and both are underpinned by a DIY aesthetic. It's a music that can be embraced by anyone of any socio-economic background, all you need is a beat, a pen and paper and you can start communicating a message.
Yeah I'm waxing lyrical and that's another thing I love about Hip Hop, it's poetry in motion.
I love hip-hop because:
The Legendary Roots Crew (L to R: Ahmir Thompson aka ?uestlove & Tariq Trotter aka BlackThought)
+ It makes me nod my head and tap my feet.
+ Thick beats and rhymes.
+ I love its diversity, but when it is made with heart, soul and poetry, it is beautiful.
+ Freestylin' - nuff said.
My personal favourite Hip Hop albums (in no particular order):
NEW:
Mos Def - The Ecstatic (2009)
BlakRoc (The Black Keys feat. various amazing MC's!) - BlakRoc
Q-Tip- The Renaissance
anything by The Roots; I suggest Phrenology or Do You Want More??!?. (One of the finest examples of a hip hop band out there- MC, drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, boom boxers)
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
OLDER:
Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli) - Self Titled
A Tribe Called Quest - The Love Movement (or Midnight Marauders)
Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below
Jay Z - Unplugged (Pretty ill album, one of the best 'live' hip hop albums. His backing band is 'The Legendary Roots Crew'! Live drums, bass, guitar and everything... gotta love it!)
Anything Old School : Jazzy Jeff, Run DMC, you name it.
Oh, this is awesome too! (it ain't strictly Hip Hop ;) but still fantastic)

So, it's daylight savings now. The nights are longer and earlier and it's getting a little bit harder to run. It's probably the dark, the cold and the lingering wetness that seems to accompany the evening. Sometimes the air is cold and sharp.
